Yesterday 2 new classes were announced for Final Fantasy XIV (FF XIV): the Gladiator and the Pugilist. Both classes are based on melee combat and fall under the 'Diciplines of War' in the game.
Gladiator
These are the expert swordsmen of FF XIV; they wear heavy armor and can cause serious damage with any kind of blade they can get (throwing knives included). Some Gladiators will use a shield in their off-hand for extra defense, others won't and will focus entirely on their offensive power. So basically you can become a tank, melee damage-dealer or something in between when you're a Gladiator.
Pugilist
This class focuses on hand-to-hand weapons and speed. As a result the Pugilist has lighter armor than the Gladiator and will play more like a rogue/assassin kind of character in other games. Obviously Pugilists mainly go for high melee damage, but they have another weapon as well: the chakram. This is a thrown weapon that Pugilists use when they're not yet in melee-range of their target.
FF XIV is an upcoming MMORPG by Square Enix (possible release in 2010). It will be cross-platform (PC and PS3, maybe Xbox 360 as well - this is still unconfirmed) with monthly fees.
Noteworthy is that you won't be stuck with a single class, but you can switch to whatever class you want to play at any given time if you have the right equipment for that class. This system means that there won't be any experience or levels; so obtaining strong gear will be very important for your character's development.
